" You will always be in our Hearts!"

Max was born in March, 1993, in New Smyrna Beach Florida. His brothers and sisters were left in the overnight cage at the local Humane Society. We arrived at the shelter, Max was the only puppy left from his liter. He sat alone in the back. He looked so sad. The other dogs barked and jumped at us to pet them. I kept coming back to the lonely dog in the corner. I entered his cage and he began to shake. I had tears in my eyes. I looked at my husband and said, This is the one . He was so small. He wanted to be carried close to my body. I remember the first stop was to Wal-Mart for food, treats, a bed and lots of toys. That first night was so hard; he cried and howled all night. The next night, he was in our bed between us where he remains nightly to this day.

As the years moved forward, Max made lots of dog friends. Cuda played Frisbee on the beach with Max that is, until the day they collided. Of course it bothered me more than it did him; he loved playing with ole Cuda. Weebles was a good friend too. Max and Weebles loved to watch us surf. They d sit quietly on a beach towel, occasionally prancing in and out of the ocean to cool off. When it was time to go, Max just followed us back to the car. No leash was ever needed. It was as though he knew better than to get lost; he had a good home and a good family.

In 1997 my daughter Bridget was born. He would look at her for the next 2 years as if to say please take her back to wherever she came from . But, in the long run, they too became friends. He loves her as much as she loves him. In fact, she refers to him as her brother.

Max is 15 now; yes you might say that he has lived a good life. Only problem is, we just aren t ready to let him go. Another problem, he s just not ready to let us go either! Max was diagnosed with cancer on January 29, 2008. That was the day our hearts broke. They told us 3 to 6 months . We cried and we prayed. Then, we came together as a family and decided to get tough for Max. We knew that he needed us now more than ever. That s when I read Ted Scheneck s book on How to Cure Canine Cancer . Max continues to fight the fight. We know that Max can t live forever, but we will do our part to keep him comfortable and happy for as long as he has with us. He was our gift from heaven and now he is our Hero!
